Tips For Serving Italian Cuisine At A Special Event

by Gilbert Lopez

If there is one type of cuisine that is sure to please everyone on your party guest list, it's Italian cuisine. Party-goers of all ages will have no problem finding an appetizer or main course to please their palate if you serve up either casual or gourmet Italian dishes or a combination of both types.

Because it is so versatile and encompasses a wide range of food options, Italian cuisine is appropriate to serve at any type of special occasion or event. Some ideas include both kids' and adults' birthday parties, bridal and baby showers, corporate and family holiday get-togethers, housewarmings, graduation and anniversary soirees, and reunions.

You can also easily serve Italian cuisine at both indoor or outdoor venues, such as country barns, vineyards, state parks, backyards, reception halls, and event centers. If you're serving the food outdoors, make sure you cover it up to protect the food from the natural elements.

Depending on your party-planning budget, you can make the food yourself, have a restaurant cater it for you, or do a combination of both. If you choose to prepare the dishes in your own kitchen, use your favorite Italian eatery's menu as inspiration.

Here are some food ideas for your next celebration:

Appetizers

1. Caprese Salad Skewers

For more casual get-togethers, consider serving Caprese skewers rather than the traditional salads. Skewers will be easier for guests to eat on the go as they mix and mingle with other party-goers.

To make these handy appetizers, simply slide cherry tomato and fresh mozzarella balls onto wood or metal skewers, alternating them as you go. Place the skewers on a serving platter, and then drizzle balsamic vinegar and olive oil over them, avoiding the bottom portion of the sticks. Finish with a sprinkle of fresh, chopped basil.

2. Pizza

Serving pizza at a party is convenient in that it can work as both appetizers and main courses. When presenting the pizza as appetizers, cut it into smaller square pieces. Make or order pizzas with a variety of both vegetarian and traditional meat toppings, such as sausage and pepperoni.

Main Courses

1. Family-Style Pasta

A simple way to serve a variety of classic pasta dishes is on a buffet-style table. Prepare or order a selection of classic options, including lasagna, eggplant Parmesan, fettuccine Alfredo, and basic spaghetti and meatballs. Place the food in warming trays to keep them the perfect temperature throughout the event.

2. Calzones

Other party menu items that are easy to enjoy on the go are calzones. You can fill the crunchy pockets of dough with any combination of ingredients, such as ricotta cheese, mozzarella and spinach, or mozzarella, pineapple and Canadian bacon.
